The Upper Mekong Region is ethnically diverse, with easily over 150 groups and subgroups, and thousands of dialects. Formerly Burma, Myanmar is home to bustling markets and numerous parks and lakes. If you walked among these smiling and resilient people, it might be hard to imagine that Myanmar may contain more child soldiers than any other country in the world.
The Shan State area of the Upper Mekong Region represents one of the greatest needs for the rescue and reintegration of child soldiers. Many non-state armed groups use children to fight their wars. All children are subject to their service as child soldiers, or are used and sold into servitude and prostitution.
HOPE aims to reshape this region by providing restorative environments for children to thrive in and educational opportunities.
