Canada - Food for Thought

BRIGHT is a fundraising initiative raising support specifically for education programs. We want to provide a bright future for the children under our care, and within the regions and communities in which our agents around the world are working. By making a donation to Food for Thought in Canada, you’re not only giving the gift of education, you’re providing the opportunity for a brighter future.

The latest figures from Statistics Canada (2013) once again show that too many BC children - 1 in 5 - are growing up in poverty. Nearly 19,000 families in BC include food-insecure children. Hunger and poor nutrition have well-known effects on a child's growth and development. In addition to the impact on their physical health, poorly nourished children have trouble concentrating at school and may exhibit behavior challenges.

Experts recognize that hunger can affect concentration and learning. This year's annual survey raises new concerns beyond academic performance. When kids are hungry it can result in troublesome behavioural issues: (Source: Kellogg’s Breakfasts for Better Days Survey of Canadian Teachers).

  • 93% of teachers agree that hungry children are more irritable and disruptive in the classroom;
  • On average, teachers estimate that children who come to school hungry lose up to two hours a day due to lack of productivity;
  • 86% said students who are hungry are more likely to engage in bullying than their peers;
  • Two-thirds of surveyed teachers observed that hungry students struggle to make friends.

Food For Thought provides free breakfast to over 1600 children a day in Kelowna, Lake Country, and West Kelowna. Our programs run in 32 locations, encompassing 80% of district public schools.

By ensuring children begin their day with a nutritious breakfast, they are seeing happy productive classrooms with reduced behavioral problems, increased academic performance, and a sense of community.

In addition to the breakfast program, we have successfully piloted a new program; our backpack program that we are now ready to expand from one school to eight as funding allows. This program sends backpacks filled with food home for the weekends with students who would normally go without.
